Chapter 3: Siren

Music and lyrics by: Riley & the Roxies

Chorus

She’s a siren, she’s stunning,

I’m studying all of her philsophies,

She’s in college, she’s got it.

Got to have her, give me something more to believe.

Tag

We’ll be having all the fun, baby this is what I want,
I never could have dreamed of a girl like you before.

Verse

I’m listening, just say it,

All that’s on your mind.

Can’t take this, silence,

I want your love for one more night.

Chorus

She’s a siren, I’m studying, all of her philosophies,

Got to have her give me something more to believe,

Baby this is what I want, I never would have dreamed of a girl like you.

Verse

I’m waiting to see you, with your black dress and nervous smile,

I can’t contain this, emotion, come on love, for one more night.

Chorus

She’s a siren, I’m studying, all of her philosophies,

Got to have her give me something more to believe,

Baby this is what I want, I never would have dreamed of a girl like you

She’s a beauty, one and only,  when she holds me,

I can feel her warmth in my arms, she’s my baby,

When I kiss her, I can feel the love in her lips.

Tag

While we’re falling into love, we’ll be swimming in the sun,
I never would’ve dreamed of a girl like you before.

Outro

I’m waiting to see you, with your black dress and nervous smile,

I can’t contain this, emotion, come on love, for one more night.

Chorus

She’s a siren, I’m studying, all of her philosophies,

Got to have her give me something more to believe,

Baby this is what I want, I never would have dreamed of a girl like you

Narrator:  Things began to pick up for Dean in Los Angeles. If he had gone to Paris, he might have lost the one in a million chance of meeting famed publicist, “Manny McCoy.” With a shake of a hand, and the inkling of a pen, Dean was officially signed to McCoy Publishing Company. Manny’s appeal to Dean was that Manny understood 1960’s French Nu Wave cinema, he enjoyed abstract art, and he often delighted himself in the finest Cuban cigars. Manny became a mentor to Dean, and with time, Manny taught the young musician how to spin the intricate webs of the mass media circuits.

Dean was introduced to all the right people in the big bright city of Los Angeles, and he was immediately sent off to travel the United States singing his songs, and strumming his guitar. Audrey started to worry about Dean, he began to seem different. They would talk on the phone, but opportunities were scarce, performances lined up side by side, Dean couldn’t stay in contact for longer than twenty minutes at a time. He’d send for Audrey, but her father forbid her to leave until she finished college. Dean was lonely, home sick, and confused.

While on the road, Dean met a girl. A siren. She was exhilarating, clever, and sultry. Love is fickle, love is strange, Mr. Dean Malloy, what were you doing with that dame.

(Roxanne lays by an elegant pool, in classic beach babe attire, she’s confident, she is the color red.)

Roxanne: Dean? He’s a doll. A real dream boat. He was so kind and charming when I met him, I just fell in love the moment I saw him! What a catch, I’m sure now he’s got model’s chasing him all over the states! I hope he found someone who can take care of him better than I could. Poor thing, he was always caught up in the middle of life. He was…content, but kind of sad sometimes…like he missed out on something. Maybe it was his youth. I always had to remind him to have fun, take it all in! We were so young, and free, sometimes he forgot that. There was always something on his mind…maybe it was another girl from his past. (Roxanne pauses for a moment almost as if she was sad, and then sees a friend and immediately is distracted by joy and laughter.)

Yeah, I’ll walk out with m head held high and say,

“You people, are crazy. You people are weird, and stand off-ish.”

Come on, let’s dance, hold my hand, baby you look great.

I want to escape this, I want to walk out and remember:

You caught my eye like no one did.

You are my kind like no one is,

You are the one that’ll break my heart,

That’ll break my heart

If you always leave me

Kiss me girl like the end of the world,

Like the end of the world, like you’re the only one for me,

Hold me girl like the end of the world, it’s the end of the world,

And you’ll stay right here for me, with me, just you and me, just you and me

“What are we, what is this?” Baby come on please,

We don’t need a label, when we’re willing and able.

Let’s runaway, make day, baby don’t you wait,

I don’t need an answer, we’ll just call it romance girl.

You caught my eye like no one did.

You are my kind like no one is,

You are the one that’ll break my heart,

That’ll break my heart

If you always leave me

Kiss me girl like the end of the world,

Like the end of the world, like you’ve always wanted the only one for me,

Hold me girl like the end of the world, it’s the end of the world,

And you’ll stay right here for me, with me, just you and me, just you and me

You caught my eye like no one did.

You are my kind like no one is,

You are the one that’ll break my heart,

That’ll break my heart

If you always leave me

Kiss me girl like the end of the world,

Like the end of the world, like you’re the only one for me,

Hold me girl like the end of the world, it’s the end of the world,

And you’ll stay right here for me, with me, just you and me, just you and me

Come on, let’s dance, hold my hand, baby you look great.

I want to escape this, I want to walk out and remember:

Kiss Me Girl

Narrator: Dean Mallow is a tragic figure, he’s been compared to the Elvis Presley type, a rebel without a case, a lost little boy trapped in a young man’s body, enchanted by the mistress of rock n’ roll. He’s the type of kid that evokes a sense of restlessness. You can see it in his eyes. Ask any of his friends, colleagues, fellow musicians, they’ll all tell you that this kid has seen grey skis, been dealt a bad hand: he’s been lied to, cheated, beaten, and robbed, but there’s one thing about him that everyone seems to recognize…he’s got heart.

(A man sits at a poker table shuffling cards, and dealing them to himself) This is Dean’s best friend: Charley. Charley is the funny guy, he’s the type of guy that always had a pretty girlfriend, but you always wondered why. He’s not much of an athlete, definitely not an academic, I guess he just gets his way, he’s interesting and he’s loyal to Dean.

Charley: I first met Dean in grade school, and we became close in high school when he started to go steady with my sister, “Audrey.” My pops never liked him. He always gave him a hard time, cause he didn’t have a “real job.” You could tell it really got to Dean. When he first heard about the trip to Paris, Dean kind of thought it was too good to be true, but you could tell he really wanted to believe it could happen…at least for our sake. The whole idea of it was a gamble. Sure, we all loved California, but Europe! It sounded so grand. And the women, I had heard they’re more stunning then the Eifill tower, or the leaning tower of Pizza!

It turned out, the band didn’t have enough money to purchase the plane tickets. They’re manager at the time, Don, had em’ sign a bad contract which left the majority of the finances to him! And he needed the cash to pay off some sharks, so he took it right out of Dean’s pocket…metaphorically at least, he was really funneling the money into a separate bank account.

You should have seen the look on my dad’s face when Audrey knocked on his door asking if she could move back in. The whole situation was complicated, and honestly it was pretty awkward. But it was real tough for Dean, and Audrey cause she kept on getting caught in between Dean, and my dad. She loved them both but kept on finding herself somehow stuck in the middle. I told her not to worry about it, but to her and Dean…it felt like the end of their world.

1964: Let’s Go to Paris:

Narrator: (His voice is iconic, but a little monotone; he talks over a jammin’ surf-rock instrumental)

Audrey eats a cheeseburger on the pier, with the California sun shining bright behind her. She’s never done an interview before, but tells us, she has had her picture taken many times in the past. She’s vulnerable, delightful, and quite charming. Audrey recalls the Summer of 1964 for us. It was the summer that she almost went to Paris, a summer she spent in love with Dean Malloy.

Audrey:

(Audrey holds a classic cheeseburger in one hand, while the other shades her eyes from the sun)

Should I stare directly into the camera sir? Would you mind if I finished my hamburger first before we begin the interview? I’d feel terrible if the whole world was offended by my poor eating habits! Alright, well if you say so!

My name is Audrey. I’m 19 years old, but when people first meet me, they always assume I’m older…at least four years older, sometimes they even guess that I’m 27. It was my first summer living out on my own. And Daddy didn’t like the fact that I was moving out right after I graduated high school, but I explained to him that I was a very well-connected individual. I still am!

I think he always expected his little girl to never grow up, or become attracted to men, or big girl things like: fashion, culture, and music! Oh how, I loved a boy that could play the guitar, and sing.

Daddy always used to tell me, “Audrey, you’re growing up to fast!”, “Those friends of yours, those BOYS, they’re nothing but trouble makers, and I don’t like you hanging around with them, with their fast cars, dance halls, and cigarettes!” (Photos of young men and women dancing, smoking, and having fun)

Daddy smokes, daddy likes Cuban cigars, and I’m sure at one point in his life Daddy fell  in love. At least I hope he fell in love, he married my mother after all!

I bought a plane ticket to Paris. Dean’s band, Dean was my boyfriend at the time, they were going on their first international tour to Europe. He said they’d mostly be playing in dive bars, and saloons, but he’d get to play the his original songs, and that was so rare for boys his age. He hated the thought of selling out, but at the same time, he really wanted to get out of the slums of Los Angeles, and live the life of a real “Auteur.” I always knew that one day, he’d be playing in big ball rooms, concert halls, and theaters, but at that time, all we were looking for an adventure. I was madly in love with Dean, I think at one point I even wanted to have his babies. But, sshh…Don’t tell daddy.
